FAQs
How Do You Keep Fruit Cake Moist?
The obvious answer to keeping fruit cake moist from this post is using sweetened condensed milk! When a cake has a high ratio of dry ingredients, condensed milk is perfect for keeping your cake full of moisture. Another top tip to keep your fruit cake moist is to always soak your fruit before making your fruit cake. Leaving your fruit overnight to soak before you use it will help to keep your cake moist and soft once baked.
Why is Condensed Milk Used in Cakes?
Sweetened condensed milk is a very popular ingredient when it comes to cake making and here's why: it makes your cake more tender, and far more moist. It also helps to enhance the flavor too. Sweetened condensed milk is usually used as a substitute for egg(s) and sugar in a recipe. It's also great at adding color to the crust of your cake, if that is something that's important to you.
Can You Make a Dry Fruit Cake Moist?
Of course! If you've made your fruit cake and it's not looking as moist as you'd like it, there are a few ways you can try to salvage it. The easiest way is to soak a cheesecloth with either syrup, fruit juice or alcohol. Once the cheesecloth has been soaked, wrap your cake in it and place in the fridge. If after soaking your cake, it's still no moister, there's another way you may like to try. The easiest way to do this is to grab a skewer and make several holes around all edges of the cake (be sure you're skewering to the other side of the cake). Grab a pan and add 1/2 cup of alcohol of your choice (brandy, rum, cognac etc.), with a touch of orange zest. Put your cake on top until the alcohol begins to simmer. Once steaming, spoon the sauce all over your cake, ensuring the sauce is going inside the holes of your cake. Do this until the majority of the alcohol has been absorbed. Remove the cake from heat and leave to cool before serving.
